In this training program you will develop an understanding and insight into the management of wounds in people with lymphoedema and chronic oedemas and how this impacts an individual physically, functionally, psychologically, and financially.

Gary Bain has over 32 years’ experience in wound care working in the clinical specialty of plastics and reconstructive surgery nursing. His interest in acute wounds expanded to include chronic and complex wound care and in 1990 founded the Sydney Adventist Hospital’s Wound Clinic. He was Clinic Manager and lead clinician for the following 25 years.
Gary currently provides education to medical, nursing, allied-health and product-industry personnel. He also provides clinical support to patients and their clinicians in the aged care, primary care and community sectors. These activities are conducted concurrently with his present roles as educator and nurse consultant in wound management at the Mt Wilga Private Rehabilitation Hospital and Berkeley Vale Private Hospital.
Gary is a member Wounds Australia, HEMI Advanced Wound Care Network, the Australasian Lymphology Association and the Australian College of Nursing.
Louise is an occupational therapist with over 30 years of clinical experience in both public and private settings specialising in breast cancer rehabilitation and lymphoedema management. As Director at Australian Lymphoedema Education, Research and Treatment (ALERT) program Louise is involved in strategically managing and developing the education, research and treatment arms of the innovative multidisciplinary program. Her particular area of interest is on the early prospective surveillance model of care in early detection and management of lymphoedema and innovative advances in management.
Louise has been leading and teaching in the ALERT Education program since 2017 including offering ALA accredited programs under the ALERT banner. She develops and presents education workshops and advanced skill-based units on all aspects of assessment and management of lymphoedema locally, nationally and internationally. Her particular area of interest is on the prospective surveillance and early intervention model of care for the early detection and management of lymphoedema as well as innovative advances in conservative and surgical management.
Louise’s clinical interests and expertise are in developing a therapeutic relationship with individuals and personalising treatment programs that support the individual’s needs and goals to achieve positive outcomes.
Louise is a current member of the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA), Australian Society of Breast Diseases (ASBD) and the Lymphoedema Action Alliance (LAA).
Cost for 2021 is $1,000 plus GST. Fees must be paid in Australian dollars by credit card. If your workplace will be funding your participation and is unable to pay by credit card, please write to ALERT education at alerteducation@mq.edu.au to request an invoice for payment by direct deposit.
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are included. Please advise of any special dietary requirements as part of your registration.

Cancellations more than three weeks before the program date incur a non-refundable administration fee of $50 plus GST, which will be taken out of your refund. Alternatively, enrolment can be transferred to another course without incurring a cancellation fee. No refund will be given if cancellation is made within three weeks of the course date.
This course will be governed by the NSW Government COVID-19 guidelines and the MQ’s stringent COVID-19 guidelines. If you are travelling from interstate and are unable to attend due to border closures, you can either transfer your deposit or full payment to another course or apply for a refund. To do this please contact alerteducation@mq.edu.au.
This training program will be conducted in the Department of Health Professions in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University.
