In recognition of World Lymphoedema Day, ALERT held a free public forum for patients and their families on Monday 5 March 2018. The event consisted of 7 short presentations focusing on different aspects of lymphoedema treatment and management.

Tissue analysis, exercise and cancer survivorship

Maureen McBeth, MPT, CLT-LANA, is a US lymphoedema and cancer rehabilitation specialist with over 21 years of experience as a physiotherapist. Her primary areas of interest are in the early intervention and prevention of lymphedema and in the expanding use of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) for tissue analysis.

In this presentation, given on Monday 12 February 2018, Ms McBeth talks about how she uses BIS in the management of patients following cancer treatment.

An update on lymphoedema prevention and management

Dr. Sheila Ridner is the Martha Rivers Ingram Professor of Nursing at VUSN. She received her PhD in Nursing Science from Vanderbilt University in 2003 and completed her Postdoctoral Oncology Nursing Fellowship in 2005, also at Vanderbilt.

Dr. Ridner is the Principal Investigator of the Vanderbilt University Lymphoedema Early Detection Clinical Trial, in which Macquarie University is the only participating university outside the US. We are contributing the highest number of trial subjects (400) to the total cohort of 1,100 women.
