A workplace that promotes diversity and inclusion

Macquarie University Health is proud of the rich diversity within our workforce and the communities we serve.

We embrace and celebrate people of all sexualities, genders, cultural backgrounds and abilities and are committed to creating an environment where our patients, staff, and volunteers feel safe, respected, and valued.

We believe that when people feel respected and valued, they are empowered to extend that same care and compassion to others.

As an integral division of Macquarie University, Macquarie University Health continues to actively contribute to its mission of fostering a diverse, inclusive, and empowering environment detailed in the university’s Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Framework (2024–2028).

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion

Established in 2022, our Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee is made up of members from across all areas of our organisation who advise on strategy, review policies and promote awareness.

Key priorities

We participated in the Diversity Council of Australia’s (DCA) Inclusive Employer Index staff survey. Based on the insights gained, we developed and published a Committee Action Plan centred around five key priority areas:

  1. developing HR policies and procedures that reflect DEI principles
  2. encouraging more women to apply for surgical training and pursue clinical leadership roles
  3. improving cultural diversity awareness
  4. improving LGBTQ+ inclusion
  5. improving staff data collection and reporting.

Key initiatives

To date, we have implemented a range of key initiatives. We have:

  • Delivered Gender Diversity training sessions for patient-facing staff, facilitated by ACON.
  • Launched the ‘Foundations of LGBTQ+ Inclusion’ online training module for all staff.
  • Promoted awareness campaigns and celebrations, such as:
    • continue to highlight the achievements of women in our organisation and in surgery for International Women’s Day each year
    • distributed complimentary LGBTQ+ rainbow badge reels to staff for International Pronouns Day
    • expanded the display of ‘Welcome to Country’ posters across all floors of the Hospital and Clinic buildings
    • continue to share regular all staff communications to raise awareness and promote inclusion during key events such as Pride Month, National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, Wear It Purple Day, and various religious holidays.
