Diagnosis and treatment of breast implant illness

Every year, about 20,000 women have breast implant surgery in Australia, either for aesthetic enhancement or reconstruction after cancer.

However, a growing number of women have reported developing symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog and joint pain thought to be related to their implants.

The condition, which can occur in the medium to long term after breast implant surgery, is recognised as breast implant illness.

Symptoms of breast implant illness

These can include:

  • anxiety and depression
  • autoimmune disease
  • chronic fatigue
  • gallbladder disease
  • gastritis
  • hair loss
  • inflammatory bowel syndrome
  • liver dysfunction
  • muscle and joint pain
  • pancreatitis
  • toxic shock.

Providing assessment and treatment

Our clinics are leading the way with improved safety – ensuring women with implants have the best outcomes.

  • Our breast physician will conduct a thorough assessment of your breast implants and, if needed, arrange a no-cost, same-day ultrasound.
  • If a surgical correction such as an explant or implant replacement is needed, we’ll give you a fast-track referral to one of our plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

If you have breast implants, book a check-up today. No referral is needed.
