Understanding fees, estimates and claiming

When you visit hospital as a private patient, if you have hospital cover, your private health insurance covers the cost of your stay, less an excess and any extra specialist services and fees.

Most insurance policies with hospital cover have an excess. This is a small fee that you pay when you are admitted to hospital. Check your excess amount with your insurer.

It's important to be aware that your private health insurance doesn't cover extra specialist services, such as anaesthetist services and out of pocket fees charged by your surgeon.

Before you visit our hospital please contact your health fund to find out if you are covered for your procedure and if you have an excess.

Hospital fees

Everything you need to know about your hospital costs.

Your hospital stay includes your room, theatre costs, intensive care (ICU) (if needed), inpatient medication and meals. These costs are generally covered by your private health insurance.

You may need to pay for any specialist services that are not included in your hospital cover, such as anaesthetist services and out of pocket fees charged by your surgeon. By law, doctors are required to provide full financial disclosure of known costs associated with your procedure before you go to hospital.

Check with your doctor and your health fund to see if your procedure will have any other out-of-pocket costs.

If you have a health fund excess you will be asked to pay this on admission. Some imaging and pathology charges may incur an out-of-pocket cost please check these charges with your health fund.

We will claim your costs on your behalf, so you don’t need to claim any of your hospital costs with your private health insurer.
