Providing patients with coordinated, expedited care

The Macquarie University Health Breast Cancer Service provides all supportive services in one location.

Who can refer me to the Breast Cancer Service?

You will need a referral from your GP or specialist to access the Macquarie University Health Breast Cancer Service. Once we receive your referral, our team will coordinate your appointments across the appropriate clinics and specialists.

How can I contact you?

Please email breastcancerservice@mqhealth.org.au for all enquiries, including referrals and appointment coordination. A member of our team will contact you to arrange your appointments and guide you through the next steps.

Once your referral has been received and reviewed, we’ll contact you to schedule your first appointment. Because our service is delivered across multiple clinics within Macquarie University Health, your appointments may take place in different locations depending on the specialists and tests you need.

You will receive an email confirming your appointment details, including the location, date, time, and any preparation instructions. An SMS reminder will also be sent before your appointment.

Arriving for your appointment

You’ll be asked to complete a patient information form before seeing your clinician. Please arrive a few minutes early to allow time for registration.

Your initial consultation

Your initial consultation will be with a breast surgeon. If imaging or pathology tests are required, these will be arranged promptly at one of our clinics on site. In most cases, you’ll receive preliminary results during your follow-up consultation.

If further investigation is needed, we will coordinate this process for you to make it as seamless as possible.

Please bring the following items to all appointments:

  • the referral letter from your GP or specialist
  • Medicare, health fund, pensioner or DVA cards
  • any recent imaging or test results (eg mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy, CT or MRI) from the past 6–12 months.
How much will my appointment cost?

Consultation fees vary depending on the clinic and specialist you see. You will be advised of the fees when your appointment is confirmed.

Will I get money back from Medicare?

Most appointments attract a Medicare rebate, but a gap payment will apply. Our staff can submit your claim directly to Medicare at the time of payment in most cases.

Private health insurance

Most private health funds cover inpatient (hospital) services only, not outpatient specialist consultations. Please check with your fund for details.

When do I pay for my appointment?

Macquarie University Health Breast Cancer Service is not a bulk billing practice, so you will need to pay at the time of your consultation. Don’t forget to bring your pensioner, health care or DVA cards to ensure we bill you at the correct rate.

Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)

If you have a DVA Gold Card, we can lodge your claim directly to DVA, with no out-of-pocket expense. Please bring your card to each appointment.

Parking is available across the Macquarie University Health campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your appointment confirmation email.
