Macquarie University Hospital's Endoscopy Unit provides an essential diagnostic and treatment service for conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.
Our experienced gastrointestinal specialists and surgeons perform advanced endoscopic assessments of the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, small bowel and large bowel using the latest equipment and techniques. Where needed, minor procedures such as biopsies and polyp removal are routinely performed as part of the investigations.
Procedures we perform
We provide the following procedures:
- gastroscopies
- colonoscopies
- flexible sigmoidoscopies (short colonoscopies)
- oesophageal, pyloric, large bowel or small bowel dilations
- chromoendoscopy
- oesophageal manometry and pH studies
- Barrett's oesophagus treatments
- endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
- ano-rectal ultrasound, manometry and pudendal nerve studies
- capsule endoscopies.
We also investigate many conditions including:
- bowel cancer screening
- assessment for oesophageal and stomach cancers
- inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's and ulcerative colitis
- irritable bowel symptoms
- iron deficiency
- coeliac disease
- eosinophilic oesophagitis
- haemorrhoid treatment
- pelvic floor assessments
- gastroparesis
- large polyps and polyposis syndromes.
Direct access, no-gap endoscopy and colonoscopy
At Macquarie University Health, we are committed to making timely, high-quality endoscopy accessible. Our Direct Access, No-Gap Endoscopy Program provides eligible patients with a clear, streamlined pathway to gastroscopy or colonoscopy, with no out-of-pocket costs for the procedure, specialist or anaesthetist fees.
We've designed this program to remove two common barriers to endoscopy: the wait and the cost.
- Direct access means that with an appropriate GP referral, you can proceed directly to your procedure without needing a separate specialist consultation first. Your referral and clinical history are reviewed by our team to confirm the approach is safe and right for you.
- No-Gap means that if you hold applicable private health insurance, you will pay nothing out of pocket for the procedure itself, the specialist (surgeon) fees, or the anaesthetist fees.
For eligible patients with applicable private health cover:
- Procedure fees: $0 out of pocket
- Specialist (surgeon) fees: $0 out of pocket
- Anaesthetist fees: $0 out of pocket
- Pathology: fees may apply*
* Please note that if a tissue sample is taken during your procedure, it will be sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis. Pathology is billed separately and is not covered under the No-Gap arrangement. Our team will let you know if pathology is likely and what costs may be involved.
Your private health fund excess or co-payment, if applicable under your policy, remains your responsibility.
To participate in the program you will need:
- a valid GP referral for endoscopy
- applicable private health insurance that covers endoscopy procedures
- clinical suitability, confirmed by our team on review of your referral.
If you are unsure whether your health cover qualifies, we recommend contacting your health fund before your appointment, or our team can assist you in confirming this.
- See your GP and ask for a referral to Macquarie University Health for the Direct Access, No-Gap Endoscopy Program.
- Submit your referral to our rooms, along with any relevant test results or medical history.
- Our team will be in touch to confirm your eligibility, answer any questions, and book your procedure.
